PARKERSBURG, WV (October 25, 2010) – Visitors often ask about Wood County’s history. Who established Parkersburg? Were any Civil War battles fought here? What is the area known for? What is made here?
The answers to those questions and more may be found in the recently updated and expanded Historic Guide to Wood County, published by the Greater Parkersburg Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“The CVB published its first Historic Guide to Wood County in 2001-02,” noted Bureau President Steve Nicely. “We’ve received great feedback over the years and had the opportunity to update the piece with additional commentary on Parkersburg’s bicentennial anniversary, Civil War history, and historic points of interest.”
The two-color brochure measures 4” wide by 9” tall and is 32-pages long. Ten thousand copies of the guide were printed by Chapman Printing and designed by Stonewall Marketing. The guide is free and available at the CVB office and various brochure racks throughout the region.
The guide includes information on Wood County’s Civil War ties, transportation milestones, oil & gas discoveries, Julia-Ann Square Historic District, cemeteries and general points of interest with historical significance. Information for the piece was provided by Dr. Robert Crooks, Bob Enoch, Jess Mancini, the Julia-Ann Square Historic District and many others.
The Greater Parkersburg Convention and Visitors Bureau was organized in 1985 and is an independent, nonprofit corporation dedicated to strengthening the area's economy by marketing Greater Parkersburg as a destination for leisure travel, group tours, meetings and conventions. The Bureau is devoted to providing appropriate services for visitors and its partners.
