Putnam-Houser House opens on Blennerhasset Island

Aaron Waldo and his wife Charlotte Loring Putnam built the Putnam-Houser House in 1802, calling it "Maple Shade". The house became the center of Belpre, Ohio's social life. Charlotte Putnam's new neighbor and close friend, Margaret Blennerhasset, was given the honor of leading off the first dance in Maple Shade's housewarming ball. Seven generations of the Putnam family continuously occupied the house until 1981. To avert demolition of Maple Shade, the house was moved from its original foundation to Blennerhasset Island in December 1986. In 1999, the Blennerhasset Island Historical Foundation started the ongoing campaign to restore Maple Shade and open it to the public. The dream is a reality now. The home is opening in the Summer of 2008 on Blennerhasset Island.
