PARKERSBURG, WV (May 12, 2010) – Twenty-five years ago the tourism industry landscape in Greater Parkersburg was much different then today. A number of well known area attractions were not even developed or were just underway, such as the reconstruction of Blennerhassett Mansion, area parks and a number of special events.

Through the strategic efforts of the Greater Parkersburg Convention & Visitors Bureau and countless others, the tourism industry has flourished and become an important economic engine in the community, generating jobs and revenue. This year marks the CVB’s 25th year of service to the community and is a momentous occasion for many.

The bureau hosted an open house Wednesday, May 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate its anniversary milestone, as well as National Travel and Tourism Week. The festivities included a special ribbon cutting ceremony by local and state officials as the bureau unveiled its newly renovated office and welcome center at 350 7th Street in downtown Parkersburg.

Bureau President Steve Nicely recognized CVB businesses who have been 25 year members and those who have contributed to recent office renovation. A proclamation by the Wood County Commission, cake and ribbon cutting ceremony, and special comments by West Virginia Division of Tourism Commissioner Betty Carver took place.

The bureau began operations in a small office on First Street in downtown Parkersburg, in what was then the Transit Authority bus garage. In 1994 it moved to its current location and renovated the space from a bar to an attractive information center for visitors.

“Travel matters. Our community relies on travel for tax revenue and jobs and the benefits these bring to our economy. With today’s event we hope to raise awareness and showcase why travel matters to Wood County,” Nicely said. “Travel provides a unique trickle down effect to nearly every area of business. We encourage residents to invite their friends and family to visit Greater Parkersburg this year. Shop in our unique shops, dine in our restaurants, visit our one-of-a-kind attractions and enjoy a getaway. We are a short drive away and are a tremendously affordable destination.”

“I believe Steve and his staff have kept this area on the leading edge of tourism in West Virginia for many years,” noted current CVB Board Chairman Dwight Marty. “With the CVB promoting our area, local attractions and lodging facilities have maintained success.”

“When you look at the progress of tourism in this area, one only needs to look at the increases in hotel/motel taxes over the years collected by the area government bodies. Increased tax revenues lead to more promotions, which lead to more visitors, which means more revenues for local hotels/motels, restaurants, and retail shops...and the cycle goes on,” said former CVB Board Chairman Ed Hofmann.

Travel and tourism is one of America’s largest industries, with $740 billion in direct travel expenditures by domestic and international travelers. The industry also represents one of America’s largest employers with 7.7 million direct travel-generated jobs and $189 billion in travel-generated payroll. National Travel and Tourism Week was designated by Congress and established by presidential proclamation in 1983.
