It Wonders Me.... Does it wonder you how Nature Wonder Week-end came to be? Maybe you’ve wondered how North Bend State Park became the home of Nature Wonder Weekend or perhaps you’ve wondered how Euell Gibbons was chosen to be the inaugural speaker. You’ve possibly even wondered how wild foods became the focus of the weekend. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering about Nature Wonder Weekend, the place to be for those answers is the 50th anniversary celebration held September 15-17, 2017, at North Bend State Park. During our anniversary celebration, we will feature foragers from all over the United States who love to share their passion for wild edible food education as well as revisit how it all started. You’ll get the chance to learn how Edelene Wood, President of the National Wild Foods Association, overcame numerous challenges and criticisms in planning the first event and you’ll see how her vision enabled Nature Wonder Weekend to persevere and become the longstanding success it has become today. With recognition of Euell Gibbons’ influence throughout the weekend you’ll see how the foundational theme “It Wonders Me” has continued in Nature Wonder Weekend all these decades. This year’s anniversary program will focus on the evolution of foraging in our culture over the last 50 years as well as the many ways nature and it’s wild food offerings are appreciated by foragers and nature lovers nationwide.
Our featured speakers and other experienced naturalists are ready to help participants expand their foraging knowledge and skills through your choice of hikes, workshops and programs throughout the weekend. Other highlights include a welcoming tour of the park on Friday and opening dinner followed by the Hazel Wood National Wild Food Cooking Contest and the Bill Faust Wild Cake Contest with three cash prizes of $50 each. The contests are open to all registrants and awards will be presented in categories of main dish wild meat, dessert, and wild food cake. The Wild Drink Contest winner is awarded the honorary Maxine Scarbro Friendship Cup. Saturday is overflowing with an early morning bird walk, morning hikes, work-shops and the wild food social hour. Sunday morning provides a morning service led by Dr. Don Gartman as well as the Wild Foods Workshop, featuring several members of the Wild Foods Hall of Fame to discuss and answer questions about wild foods will end the information packed weekend.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary, Nature Wonder Weekend will be packed full of even more special opportunities to learn and share foraging knowledge. The weekend begins with registration on Friday at the park lodge lobby from 2-8 pm. The afternoon will include a wild food workshop on the lodge lawn and then at 3 pm there will be an informative driving tour of the park and surrounding area. The first of the weekend’s Appalachian style buffets will be served in the lodge restaurant starting at 6:30 pm. Friday night’s speaker will be a special guest in honor of the 50th anniversary year. Be sure and enter the 31st Annual Wood-Faust sponsored Wild Foods Cooking Contest before the 8 pm Friday night meeting to try and win one of three $50 cash prizes awarded for outstanding wild food entries. The awards continue to be provided through the generosity of Edelene Wood, the late Ira Wood and Bill Faust. A registration form for the wild food contest is attached.
Begin your day Saturday with an early morning bird walk, followed with breakfast. Afterwards, small groups under the leadership of guest naturalists and park staff will hike or stroll the area looking for edible wild foods. Additional wild food and foraging workshops will be available for those who do not wish to hike. A wild food table talk will be held following Saturday’s special “It Wonders Me” luncheon. Then groups will gather to prepare wild foods to be shared during the afternoon’s wild food social hour. A buffet dinner will be available in the lodge restaurant on Saturday evening . Sunday morning the restaurant offers a buffet breakfast followed by a morning service and a wild foods workshop.
