Horseback Riding

There are several areas available to camp and ride with your equine friend. Check out your options!

Mountwood Park:

Mountwood Park isn’t just for two-legged adventurers – bring your horse and enjoy the Mountwood Park Horse Camp. Pack your tent and bring the family. With 30 miles of horseback riding trails, showers, horse stalls, and a beautiful location, you’ll want to come back for more.


Open from April 1 thru October 31 for horseback riding and then open during hunting season for hunters only.

Months of Operation: 

Camping is on a first come, first serve basis. Payment for first come, first serve can be made at the self check-in station at the horse camp. You can call for availability any time at 304-679-3610 or 304-588-0916.   


Electric- $12/night, Primitive- $10/night.

Horse Stall:

$5/night and Riding fee (if not camping)- $3/night.


Three pole barns offer a total of 26 covered 8 x 10 ft. Box stalls, easy access to city water for bathing and watering horses, nice restrooms and showers, 18 electric sites on blacktop, ample tie-lines, wooded areas and grassy slopes. Porta corrals are welcome. Three pavilions with picnic tables are also available.

Wayne National Forest: 

This is the Wayne National Forest’s newest trail system which provides 21 miles of scenic riding. Horses, mountain bike riders, and hikers are welcome on this trail. The trail winds through some of the steeper hills on the Wayne National Forest. It will lead you through a variety of vegetation: open fields, brushland, mature forest, and new forest. Along the way, you may glimpse wildlife, and will recognize the influence of humans, both now and in the past. You will also pass many of our land management activities.

Horseback riding allowed only during open season (April 15- December 15).
Day and night (with lights) access is permitted.

The trailhead is available for camping but is more a dispersed site with no designated sites or amenities.
