August 14, 2024

Greater Parkersburg was recently featured on another FOX 28 Columbus Good Day Extra segment, this time highlighting the area’s fantastic outdoor recreational opportunities!  Check out the interview with Mark Lewis, President & CEO of the Greater Parkersburg CVB.

Nature lovers will find themselves right at home in Greater Parkersburg. The area boasts some of the best mountain biking, hiking, and kayaking trails in the country.

Mountwood Park

Mountwood Park, with its 45 miles of multi-use trails, is a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers of all skill levels.  Mountwood Park Lake is a haven for kayakers, with kayak rentals and more available through the Mountwood Adventure Concession right by the water.

North Bend State Park

North Bend State Park offers another fantastic option for hiking and biking enthusiasts.  Hikers and bikers can explore the park’s diverse trails, while those seeking a more aquatic adventure can rent kayaks from North Bend Outfitters, conveniently located next to North Bend Lake.

For a truly unique experience, embark on a journey along the North Bend Rail Trail.  This 72-mile path winds its way over 36 bridges and through 10 tunnels, including the haunted Silver Run Tunnel.  The gentle 3% incline of the former railroad grade makes this trail perfect for family outings, with bicycle rentals available from North Bend Outfitters near one of the trailheads.  Several other access points are located outside of North Bend State Park for added convenience.

The Ohio River Water Trail

The Ohio River Water Trail beckons paddlers seeking to explore the majesty of the Ohio River and its tributary, the Little Kanawha River.  The trail encompasses 29 miles of the Ohio River and 18 miles of the Little Kanawha, with multiple launch points available.  One such launch point is conveniently located by the Welcome Center at Point Park, where Wild River Kayak Co. offers rentals for those wanting to explore the Ohio River Water Trail or journey to Blennerhassett Island.

Just a short five-minute drive from downtown Parkersburg, the McDonough Wildlife Refuge provides a peaceful escape for hikers and walkers.

Greater Parkersburg truly offers something for everyone.  Whether you’re an adrenaline-seeking mountain biker, a nature enthusiast seeking a leisurely hike, or a family looking for a fun-filled day on the water, Greater Parkersburg is the perfect destination for your next outdoor adventure!
