Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoor weather and new green foliage. You’ll be sure to find ample outdoor activities and recreation opportunities in Greater Parkersburg!

Here are a few of our favorites:

Fort Boreman Historical Park  – Short beginner trail; scenic overlooks of Ohio and Little Kanawha Rivers.  Located two miles from downtown Parkersburg, the park features a partially reconstructed Union Civil War fortification, trenches, interpretive signage, picnic shelters and spectacular views of Parkersburg and the Ohio and Little Kanawha Rivers.

Mountwood Park  – Meticulously maintained trails pass through both eastern hardwood forest and open areas, along pleasant creeks and lakeshore, and atop stony ridges. Hiking trails range from 1 to 30 miles.  Mountwood Park, a 2,600-acre park just 12 miles east of Parkersburg off of U.S. Rt. 50, contains beautiful wooded hills and valleys.

McDonough Wildlife Refuge – Hiking trails ranging from 0.5 miles to 2.0 miles. The McDonough Wildlife Refuge, located on Rosemar Road in Vienna, WV, has a well-maintained hiking trail that is open to hikers year round from dawn to dusk. The Refuge offers bird watching opportunities with duck marshes, comfort stations, and an overlook. Picnic facilities and a short paved trail are also available for use.

North Bend State Park & Rail Trail   – 14 hiking trails with a total of 20 miles are available for all skill levels including the “Extra Mile” trail, which is paved and level.  Spend the weekend at the 2,500-acre North Bend State Park, located in Cairo, WV, where you can stay at the lodge, deluxe cabin, or the campground before or after a long hike. Don’t miss a walk on the North Bend Rail Trail. The trail stretches 72 miles through 13 tunnels, rural countryside and several historic sites.
